Say NO to Shark Fin Soup

I do admit that when I was a kid, I love to eat shark fin soup..
Mum always told me that it is expensive and it good..
When I go for wedding dinner .. I will always look forward for this soup..
so eat more ...

Shark Fin Soup...

Well CNY is around the corner..
I am sure you all will plan to have your reunion dinner with your family, friends, colleagues & etc..

That day I was choosing for my CNY reunion dinner menu..
The first dish that recommend to me is the shark fin soup..
Immediately I rejected it... I told him that my family had stop eating shark fin.....
So I change to crab meat, prawn & dried scallop soup..
Which I think it is equally good and better...

I saw the video on how they harvest the shark fins.. one word CRUEL...
they cut the fins and then throw the shark back to the sea.
of course most of the shark will not survive....

So cruel and they cut the shark fin out from the shark....

I hope that if you want to order shark fin soup please do think about the shark.....
Hopefully with the less demand ... the SUPPLY (Shark Fin) will be reduce...

The Yum List & Fiseel had pledge the support for this....
I hope that you could stand up and SAY NO to SHARK FIN Soup...

  2. i guess one possibility could be to switch to the artificial/fake "shark fin" soup. the one where the "fins" are made of gelatin in factories, not taken from real sharks in the sea...

  3. Good decision!

I have stopped eating shark fin for the 11th year. I will not order it and I will not touch it even if its ordered by someone else.

  4. Yesssssss!!!!! Save the sharks!!! A shameless, blatant egoistic display of one's opulence. Vanity at its worst! Senseless flaunting of wealth - for the mere sake of showing off. Ain't that some kind of sick mentality? And those things are, in fact, quite tasteless. Stupid is as stupid does.

    4. Now the shark fin soup mostly is fake one. Sadly a lot of consumers like to order this dish because of status and glamour.

    5. Fake ones, small ones, hardly-any ones...the guests will sneer at you. "Egg soup!" they will criticise out loud. But if huge big ones, they will also sneer anyway, "Humph!!! Show off! So rich kah?" This sort of culture and sheer kiasu-ness mentality - we should get rid off completely.

And then there will not be the danger of getting fleeced - paying the price for genuine sharks' fins and getting glass noodles or worse, plastic imitations!!!! Stupid is a stupid does...

  11. Yay! As I didn't grow up with shark's fin, it's very easy for me to say "no" thanks. I truly admire you though SP! You have a much more difficult job and have been able to reflect on something that is part of cultural heritage and ask the question, "why?" Admirable effort to pass the word and work towards a better future. :-)

  12. i think nowadays shark's fin are also quite rare.. most of the time those so-called shark's fin we have in a normal restaurant are just "glass noodles" that made to look like shark's fin.. it reminds me of how people who go on vegetarian are eating "vegetarian meats"..

    1. yes, until we know how inhumane the animals are treated, i guess we still are ignorant about how the food are sourced from.. sometimes rather not to think..

    2. i think not only sharks but think of other things that harm the animals badly, like foie gras, monkey brain, bear palm, gall bladder juice from bears.. these are more extremes one but we still may find such treatment with the poultry and meat that we eat everyday..

    3. Echo SK why only sharks? Should also say NO to Foie Gras as well where else the rest are mostly protected animals by the law.

    4. Please don't deviate! This is a cause for concern...and I do wish people will know when not to make a joke or a laughiung matter out of everything.

It's the cutting of the fins and throwing the rest of the fish, quite alive at the time, into the sea that is the cruel part. They can just catch the whole fish - take the fin and sell the rest of it at the fish market...but of course, they're not bothered as there is no money in that. As they say. money is the root of all evil.

  13. Many people these days are against shark fin. I noticed that even at Chinese functions and weddings, fin has been replaced with other types of meat. I will support it all the way. Kudos to you too.

  14. Say no to shark fin soup. Nowadays there is hardly any shark fin soup. Mainly what's inside the soup are plain glass noodles and others.

  15. Yes..those days when dinners, saw the extra bowl on the table.. it means got shark fins soup.. very happy one.. but nowadays, after all the "say no to shark fin" I feel guilty of eating them.. sometimes no choice cos wedding dinners..but I have never actually buy shark fin and cook before... too expensive for me... nowadays restaurants normally replace it with other ingredients.. equally tasty as well.. :)

  16. It's not something we eat during CNY family reunion dinner - shark's fin soup isn't in our family tradition, we eat chicken soup instead - I think that's a Heng Hua tradition coz I know another family does it, thought it might just be our two families and not Heng Hua. Haha.

I agree with STP, nothing wrong with eating the whole shark, just not cutting off the fin and throwing the (soon to be dead) shark back in. Selling the entire shark for meat works out okay morally for me. Shark's meat actually tastes pretty good - gritty and sandy.

    Cheers buddy! :)

  17. I've been saying no to this dish for very long... but for information, there are some 'smaller' fin out there which is not belongs to the shark.. and it's 'pretend' to be one.. so, better not eat than kena cheated... :D
